East Sussex County Council is asking people to be aware of the potential danger of open drainage holes and to report any they see are missing or any people acting suspiciously.
Over 150 grates have been stolen in during the recent spate of thef
ts in the east of the county.
The exposed chamber holes are approximately 30cm by 45cm and can be up to one metre in depth.
East Sussex Highways are working to find the sites where grates have been stolen, make them safe and replace the grate as soon as possible.
However the additional demand on manpower and resources means that other roadworks may be delayed. Each grate costs up to £300 to replace.
Councillor Matthew Lock, lead cabinet member for transport and environment said: "These thieves are not only stealing public property and delaying much needed work on the roads, but are putting the public in danger. I would urge anyone who has any information that may help catch these vandals to call East Sussex Highways or Sussex Police."
It is assumed that the stolen grates will be sold as scrap metal. East Sussex Highways are contacting scrap metal dealers and asking them to report anyone attempting to sell the grates.
To report a missing grate or anyone acting suspiciously call East Sussex Highways on 0845 60 80 193 or Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999.
