Former Helenswood maths teacher Steve Buchanan will be saddling up for charity next month.

Steve, from Wellington Road, will go coast-to-coast from Whitehaven in Cumbria to Newcastle in October on a three-day 140 mile sponsored bike ride across the Pennines.

Steve, who from September will be working for the Excellence Cluster, and doing some private tuition, is hoping to raise funds for Amnesty International through sponsorship.

He said: "I generally keep very active and as well as cycling -I've done the Crown Lane thing the last 2 years. I love dancing, badminton, swimming and running. I plan to do a sponsored half-marathon with a group from the Excellence Cluster next March and, if I can get fit enough, a triathlon in June."

To sponsor Steve go to www.justgiving.com/stevebuchanan.
