HASTINGS, Rye and District Scouts are appealing for help in their bid to track down a new home.
Their longstanding headquarters in Hastings Old Town closed in 2005 and they have been using temporary accommodation since then whilst searching for a suitable replacement.
Spokesman Kevin Harmer said this week: "We sold our old headquarters as
it had outlived its usefulness due to age and location.
"Since that time we have been looking for new premises or land to purchase, but have had no luck.
"Nothing suitable has turned up - most places are either too far out of Hastings or too expensive.
"We are currently renting a shop in Park Avenue so we can continue to run our District Scout and Guide Shop and we have equipment stashed all around the district! It's getting quite desperate."
They are looking for a site or building anywhere in Hastings or on the outskirts, as far as Crowhurst or Fairlight.
Kevin explained: "We are hoping through the Observer we might be lucky enough to find someone who is willing to sell (or maybe donate) to us what we need.
"Ideally we are looking to acquire a plot of land, which needs to be a minimum of half an acre, and then we will build a new HQ on it."If we find land to build something on we can then apply for grants to help with the costs.
"The new building would hopefully be a Scandinavian style timber construction using sustainable materials and trying to reduce the carbon footprint.
"It needs to be large enough to be used as a meeting hall for a scout group, storage for district equipment and Gangshow costumes, meeting rooms for various committees, and to be used as a training centre for scout leaders and scouts from the surrounding area.
"The site would also need space for parking and an outside area/garden to teach younger members about outdoor scouting."
Added Kevin: "Scouting has just celebrated its 100 years so it would be timely if we were to secure a new HQ at this special time."
