OVER 50 students at University Centre Hastings (UCH) celebrated their graduation success on Monday.

The students have achieved a range of qualifications, many against the odds having overcome personal hurdles to achieve their dream of a university education.

Imogen Hirst, from Hastings, left school at 14 and as a single mother with two children battled significant challenges to gain her degree, a BA (Hons) in Applied Social Science.

Her efforts were rewarded when the University of Brighton chose her to win the prestigious Hamilton-Cramp prize of academic achievement and contribution.

Imogen now plans to undertake a postgraduate research degree in urban regeneration focusing on Hastings, and is committed to make a difference to the town.

She said: "I enjoyed the celebration very much. It was great that my children could see what I have achieved. It was a privilege to be there."

Other success stories included Applied Social Science graduate Della McKenzie who will be starting a teaching job at Bexhill College in September while taking a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, and Sana Malik who is planning to take up a postgraduate MA in Criminology.

Talented Clare Emson, a Business Degree Foundation student, also won an award for the highest score of any business student across the University of Brighton.

University of Brighton Vice-Chancellor Professor Julian Crampton congratulated students saying: "All of you have worked hard to achieve your qualifications, sometimes in the face of quite challenging
circumstances.

"It is a particular pleasure to celebrate your success.

"UCH is extremely successful, it is going from strength to strength and you are part of that success. You should be very proud of your achievements."

Mayor of Hastings Maureen Charlesworth added: "I'm so proud to be here, to celebrate your achievements in your town – Hastings. My congratulations go to all students, as well as your tutors and mentors."
