Police warn of metal theft increase

THEFTS of metal are on the increase in the Wealden District.
Police believe the rising cost of metal has led to a higher demand.
All types of metal are vulnerable.
Examples of recent incidents include copper pipes and cables, and aluminium sheets and beer barrels.
Lead has been stolen from roofs. Scaffolding poles and equipment are also popular with thieves.
Sgt Dave Price said: 'Even scrap copper water tanks and piping have been stolen from front gardens.
'Building owners are often not aware that lead has been taken from their roofs until it rains, when substantial damage is caused due to leaks.'
Police want residents and businesses to review where metal is stored.
If possible, any metal should be hidden from view.
