The Bexhill Association of National Trust Members met on February 9 for the second of its regular lecture meetings of 2008.

Mr David Lang gave an illustrated talk about his wide-ranging journey from Lewes in Sussex to Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Starting his Scottish journey in Glasgow he flew to Stornoway in Lewis and walked to the Butt of Lewis and then on to Vatersay on Barra Island involving two ferry crossings. His island-hopping travels took in Harris, North Uist and South Uist, finishing in Barra from whence he flew back to Glasgow.

During his fascinating travelogue he was able to tell his audience about the wildlife of the islands such as peregrines, gold plovers, dippers, golden eagles and corncrakes and also the floral delights of dwarf orchids, wild iris beds, thrift, primroses and purple orchids. He touched on the local attitudes to adherence of the Sabbath Day. In the north of Lewis television sets are unplugged on Sunday and you might even be accosted for walking on the Sabbath Day. He completed his circular tour by showing a picture of Lewes Castle in Sussex.

The next meeting is on Saturday, March 8 at the St Peters Community Centre starting at 2.45pm when Mrs Julia Page will give a talk on Landscapes in History as depicted in paintings. Non-members are most welcome to come along for an entrance fee of £3.00. If you are interested in joining our Association please call our general secretary, Miss Susan Ainscough on 216162. Annual subscription is only £3.50p.
