AT our last meeting, Hillary Newman made a return visit to speak this time about "Making full use of a small greenhouse.
The most important things are constant temperature and good ventilation, both of which are very difficult for the amateur. We were shown all types of greenhouses which historically came into use by the middle classes at the end of the window tax maki
ng glass cheaper. From the biggest at Kew to the newest at Wisley it was a revelation what could be grown out of season and things such as citrus fruit usually only grown in warmer climes.
We were all encouraged to "go ahead and try" even in a conservatory if we do not have a greenhouse.
We had an excellent monthly show, remarked upon by Mr Newman, when the Betty Gill Cup for the best daffodils was presented to Brian Croft.
Since our last meeting we have had a very successful coffee morning where the plant stall did wonders and a most enjoyable trip to Wisley which is good at any time of the year. Those who contributed to the plant stall have been reminded that more specimens are needed when we support the Community Centre Spring Fair on May 3 - please note 2pm start.
Long-term members will be saddened to hear that Ted Hill died last week.
He gave many years service to the society being secretary for 17 years until he retired in 1999 to go, with Daphne, to live near their son in Folkestone.
Our next meeting on May 9 will be "Plants for a shady spot" by Julie Hollobone.
