THE front page report regarding Ofsted’s damning verdict on Bexhill High comes as no surprise. Speaking to German students who have had the opportunity to visit the school in the past year,, they have been stunned at the comparison between the teaching they have had in their own country and that which they have witnessed here. The comparison has not been favourable to us! As the German students said to us in awe-struck tones, ‘how can the pupils learn?’ They described a large hall filled with up to 90 students all noisily engaged on projects and supervised by five or six teachers moving from group to group. They could not understand how this kind of teaching method could possibly work, commenting strongly on the distracting and taxing noise levels and the lack of personal engagement between teachers and pupils. However, one surely can’t blame the teachers. I can only sympathise with tutors who must surely find this kind of ‘blanket’ teaching method entirely exhausting, uninspiring, debilitating and frustrating. I realise that teaching processes are complex, but surely, smaller classes are needed - in smaller rooms, and more attention should be paid to the individual?

Thank you for your article in Friday 19th April’s Observer putting the spotlight on the plans to convert the Bell Hotel in Bexhill Old Town into flats. As an Old Town resident I was disappointed to see the plans that have been proposed, which are not in keeping with this unique building. It is surprising that a building that has played such an important part in the history of the town is not listed, and hugely disappointing that the plans remove any possibility of the Bell regaining its place as the social centre of the Old Town. It is saddening to have a building with such potential sitting empty, but to convert it to residential accommodation would remove any potential for it to add to the commercial life of the town for good. With its lovely location opposite the Manor Barn, there is such potential for locals and visitors alike to make use of this space, whether it be as a family pub, hotel or restaurant. Opponents to the plans have also made a convincing case that developments of flats in Bexhill are not needed, with sales stalling in existing developments - can the Bell’s new owners be sure that their development will be commercially viable?
