A tasty way to promote the benefits of Fairtrade goods
27/10/12- 'Big Fair Bake' event for Fairtrade, Bexhill.
JUST how many Fairtrade ingredients are available for everyday use in the kitchen was demonstrated at a Big Fair Bake held at St Mary Magdalene’s church hall.
It was organised last Saturday by the Bexhill Fairtrade Town Steering Group to highlight the range of products carrying the Fairtrade mark.
Even so, Roz Woodroffe, who baked a fruit cake for the raffle, found that more needs to be done to promote the movement, which seeks to ensure that developing world producers get a fair price for their goods and are protected from exploitation.
Roz said: “I ended up doing a tour of the shops. Fairtrade sugar was there, but Fairtrade dried fruits were in very short supply.”
Lesley Shareif, the steering group’s vice-chairman, thanked Roz and others who baked for the event, including Mary Carroll who incorporated the Fairtrade logo on her sponge cakes.
The event also attracted stalls fromTraidcraft, the Hastings and Bexhill World Development Group and Lovethatstuff from Brighton.
It raised more than £143, which together with proceeds from a similar bake at Crowhurst Primary School the week before, was donated to the Fair Trade Innovation Fund.
Alan Pegg, from Lovethatstuff, said that when working in South Africa, he had given adults chocolate and was amazed to find they had never tasted it before.
He said: “They farmed the cocoa beans to make the chocolate but never earned enough to buy the finished product.”
