Bexhill Foodbank gets VIP launch by Lord Lieutenant
14/2/13- The Lord Lieutenant of Sussex, Peter Field greeting volunteers at the opening of the Bexhill Foodbank.
THE official opening of the Bexhill Foodbank by the Queen’s representative in East Sussex, Lord Lieutenant Peter Field, coincided with the 100th person to be helped.
The Foodbank was set up by Churches Together in Bexhill and opened its doors on December 6 in time for last Christmas.
Seeded by the Trussell Trust, it collects dried and canned food, bread and toiletries, and provides supplies sufficient for three days to people finding themselves in crisis.
They are referred for help by various agencies who assess their eligibility, and are warmly welcomed with tea or coffee while provisions are prepared for them.
The Lord Lieutenant, accompanied by his wife Margaret, was joined at Parkhurst Hall for the opening last Thursday.
Project manager, the Reverend Simon Earl, rector of St Oswald’s Church, Hooe, presented them with an engraved glass bowl donated by volunteers .
Among those present were Cllr Joy Hughes and Derek Stevens, chairman and chief executive of Rother District Council, which helps to sponsor Bexhill Foodbank.
The Lord Lieutenant expressed great interest in how “at a time when we are inundated with cookery programmes on television” the project not only provides food but also menus suitable for the supplies made available in each pack.
