A BEXHILL Hospital worker whose life was saved by medics at the Irvine Unit returned last week to see staff presented with an award for their actions.

The Irvine Unit won East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust’s monthly staff award for their quick thinking and action, which saved the life of maintenance operator Mick Hughes last month.

Mick was working on the unit four weeks ago when he collapsed suddenly with heart failure.

On discovering Mick, staff on the unit reacted quickly, giving CPR and using the defibrillator to get his heart started again. Mick’s heart stopped for 20 minutes and he went into cardiac arrest again on arriving in A&E at the Conquest Hospital. Following surgery and 12 days in hospital, Mick is now recuperating at home.

Trust chairman Stuart Welling and chief executive Darren Grayson visited the unit to present staff with their award.

Crystal Lees, senior staff nurse, said: “The team were fantastic, it’s a bit of a blur and I think we were working on auto-pilot but it was emotional for us as we’ve all known Mick for so long.

“Staff demonstrated tremendous professionalism and skills in saving Mick’s life and we’re all so pleased to see him here with us today.”

Mick said: “Thank you just doesn’t seem enough because I can’t thank my colleagues enough for what they did. I know they spent a long time working on me and I’m so glad they did.

“I was lucky that this happened while I was on the unit and I know I’m lucky to still be here, and that’s all because of these people here today.

“I’d also like to thank the Coronary Care Unit and James ward at the Conquest Hospital for my treatment and care, and also all my NHS colleagues who have sent me cards,

“I’ve been overwhelmed by their support and good wishes.”
