Live, local - and tuneful

THE Bexhill Festival of Music kicks off tonight at the De La Warr Pavilion at 7pm with Keith Tippett, the UK’s leading improvisational pianist/composer.

The Festival will run throughout this month (June) with a varied programme of events at venues all over Bexhill, from the Pavilion itself to pubs and community halls.

Headliners include the world-famous Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Muntu Valdo, appearing at the De La Warr Pavilion on Friday June 17 and The Syd Lawrence Orchestra at St Barnabas Church, Sea Road, on Saturday June 18.

Festival organiser Tony Mansi said: “This is a real community event, in keeping with the Festival’s spirit - live and local.

“Every kind of music is represented - rock, blues, folk, brass, country and western and even Christian worship bands.

“Numerous choral concerts include The Big Sing on Wednesday June 15 at the De La Warr Pavilion, featuring local children of all ages.

“And what could be more local than the BLODS’ production of Copacabana from June 29 at the Pavilion?”

Guitarist, singer and songwriter Nelson King will also make an appearance at Centre Stage on Friday June 10 at 9pm.

Adding to the atmosphere is Dune’s Discs, where you are invited to submit your own music to play on the beach on the roof of the De La Warr Pavilion, which will be decked out to look just like a tropical beach.

Dune chillout evenings will take place most Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays over the summer from June 24 until 9pm.
