Localism - and what it means

NEW freedoms and flexibilities for local communities were discussed at a “localism workshop” this week.

Almost 100 people, including representatives from towns and parishes and community organisations, joined Rother Voluntary Action and Rother District Council to discuss the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

The Localism Act looks to radically shift the balance of power from central government to local areas. These include neighbourhoods and communities as well as councils and other local organisations.

The reforms look at new rights and powers to ensure planning and housing decisions take account of local views and local needs. How services are delivered can also be challenged.

Rother District Council chief executive Derek Stevens said: “The event was well-attended with a cross-section of community groups. Building awareness of the Act and having a healthy debate is important in the light of these new powers.”
