MP & PCC candidate visit Bexhill as crime levels fall
BEXHILL & Battle MP Greg Barker met up with Police & Crime Commissioner candidate Katy Bourne for a walkabout in the local area last week and welcomed the news that crime in Sussex has fallen over the last twelve months.
Though the walkabout took place during wet weather, spirits were not dampened as Mr Barker and Ms Bourne chatted to residents about the up coming elections to find the first ever Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Sussex.
Ms Bourne is the Conservative candidate for the PCC role and Mr Barker is confident that she is the right person for the job. Greg said: “Next month we will be electing a new Police and Crime Commissioner for Sussex. This will give power back to local people and us all a proper say in how our local area is policed. I am supporting Katy Bourne who joined me out and about in Bexhill and Pevensey Bay meeting local people. I am positive she will be a great local champion for our area.”
The meeting took place as latest figures, which show that crime in Sussex has fallen over the last twelve months and recorded crime fell by 2 per cent, were released by the Independent Office of National Statistics.
Greg said it was good to hear: “It is very welcome news that crime in Sussex has fallen. Everyone should be able to feel secure in their homes and safe on the streets. The police in Sussex are stepping up and rising to the challenge of providing value for money and this fall in crime is testament to their hard work.
“This shows that police reform is working. The government was right to sweep away the central targets and slash police bureaucracy. How the police are deployed, rather than their absolute numbers, is what is key to cutting crime.”
