Nostalgia Spot

THIS fine body of men was Bexhill Cricket Club 2nd X1 - although we can’t say for sure when the photograph was taken.

It was brought in by Michael Dawes, of Willenden Avenue, who is not certain of the year.

He is in the photograph front row, second left, and had the responsible job of being wicket keeper and opening batsman.

On the far right, seated, is the late Ian Roughley who was head teacher of King Offa school, then next to him Ernie Harris, Clive White, and captain Jeremy Lovegrove.

The chap wearing brown on the end is scorer Nicky Pratt.

In the row behind from the right is someone Michael’s not sure about the name of, but thinks the surname was Matthews. Next on the left is Dave Cowley, who was assistant head of Bexhill High School, and then another Michael does not remember, the head behind is that of Geoff Chinn, and the young man next to him is Martin Phillimore. The man on the left, standing, is also unknown but Michael thinks his name could be Martin.

It seems the cup was awarded when they won the East Sussex league in division two or three.

Michael commented: “I played for Bexhill Cricket Club for over 40 years. Ernie Harris played when he was at school and then played all his life for Bexhill.

“The photograph was taken at Bexhill Grammar School grounds, in Gunters Lane.”
