nostalgia spot - 1st bexhill Scouts in 1946

THE photograph of fresh faced scouts from 1946 sparked more memories for a number of our readers.

One of them is Matt Shoesmith of Wealden Way who told us: “I was a member of 9th Bexhill Scout troop. Skip Wellard’s 1st and the 9th Bexhill were great rivals. The picture shows how fit and smart the lads were. Remember the year was 1945 and we had come through five years of war - food and clothes rationing - indeed many foods were still on ration.

“Just to complete the picture, most of the lads are named, but the young ladies in the front row were, left, Barbara Redman in her 1st Bexhill Ranger uniform, those girls helped out training the lads, and the other young lady was Miss Cheeter.”
