Renew signatures for postal votes

RESIDENTS who vote in elections by post or proxy are being asked by Rother District Council to renew their signatures.

In 2006 new measures to improve security were introduced which mean providing a fresh specimen signature every five years.

The Electoral Registration Officer must now carry out the first annual refresh to ensure accurate records.

Therefore, anyone who originally applied for a postal or proxy vote in January 2007 has been sent a signature refresh form and must return it by February 21.

When you are sent your postal vote at election time, you are required to provide your signature and date of birth on a postal voting statement.

These ‘personal identifiers’ are checked against those you provided on the original postal vote application form and ensure that your vote cannot be used by anyone else.

If you have disability which means you cannot provide a signature or sign in a consistent and distinctive way, indicate this on the form and make sure the name and address of your helper are provided.

If you do not return the form by the deadline of March 12, the existing absent vote facility will be cancelled and you will have to vote in person or make a new application.

If you no longer want to vote by post, contact RDC soon as possible in order to avoid any unnecessary reminders.

• For further advice, please contact the elections helpline on 01424 787825.
