Snow falls once again for golden couple

THIS has been a week for snow but it was even worse 50 years ago when David and Pearl Easton tied the knot in 1963.

They came out of St Stephen’s church in Woodsgate Park to walk under an arch of guitars held up by David’s fellow band members but it was so wintry the couple couldn’t get off the porch for photographs.

Tomorrow sees their golden wedding anniversary and they will enjoy a celebratory weekend with family and friends, including lunch at the Cooden Beach Hotel, followed by a get-together at Easter.

David, 73, and Pearl, 70, of Millwood Road, have four children - Gayle, Sarah, David and Jason - and 16 grandchildren, plus great grand-daughter, Lottie-Bea.

David was raised in Bexhill and spent most of his working life with Post Office Telephones, which became BT. He was always a singer, and performed with Select and later Centre Page, only giving up that hobby four years ago.

In the early days they had a recording contract with Decca, and played all the major venues in London, working their way through the decades and performing alongside many familiar names in entertainment.

He met Pearl at a dance in Bexhill Amateur Athletic Club and though she arrived with another boy, she left with David. They started dating and married three years later.

Pearl had been born in London but arrived in Bexhill at just six weeks old when she was adopted.

Like David she attended The Down senior school and afterwards worked for the Observer in its front office in Western Road, and for a local solicitor, but for 27 years she was at Bexhill College first as a dinner lady and ending up as a financial assistant. She is a longterm member of the League of Friends.
