Tales from out of the closet: gay history project
NEXT month sees a moving event for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community of Rother and Hastings.
The local branch of the Rainbow Alliance is planning to celebrate LGBT History Month by holding a life story day at Stade Hall in Hastings on Saturday February 18.
Called Out Of The Closet, this is a history project aimed at encouraging local people to share and record their memories, about what has happened to them in the past and present.
The idea is to celebrate inspiring lives and achievements, and introduce oral history and memory sharing.
There will be an opportunity to talk over old times and share memorabilia, find out how to get involved, and learn oral history interviewing skills.
During the day there will be workshops, speakers, exhibitions, recordings and film, and an evening of live entertainment.
The daytime event runs 11am-5pm, film screenings 5-7pm, and entertainment and bar is from 7-10pm.
Following the event, Hastings and Rother Rainbow Alliance volunteers will continue to record life histories, with the aim of publishing extracts online, in exhibitions or in printed form. Recordings will be preserved under guidelines determined by HRRA, within the East Sussex Record Office collection.
This will help increase the presence of LGBT voices, currently under-represented within the Record Office collections.
Famous Bexhill resident Graham Norton supports Rainbow Alliance’s new LGBT History Project and celebration of LGBT History Month.
He said: “Congratulations to HRRA on the launch of their LGBT History Project. As their patron I applaud this new venture. We need to remember our achievements and share our life stories.
“I wish you every success for your celebration of LGBT History Month on February 18. Here’s to gay times, past, present and future.”
