Town centre traders get stuck into snow business

TOWN centre traders were out early on Sunday doing their bit to make it easier for people to get around in the cold snap.
They cleared the snow that fell on Saturday night from outside their shops to the appreciation of passers-by.
Hillary Randall at Silver Nutmeg cleared the front of her shop in Wickham Avenue and then made a two-foot wide path along to the traffic lights at the junction with Sackville Road.
Hillary said: “It makes such a difference to the elderly who find it so difficult to walk on slippery pavements.”
Danes staff cleared outside their dry cleaning shop and staff at Co-Op cleared the footpath behind their store.
On Devonshire Road, employees at Poppins and Little Marabou cleared the pavement outside their cafes and in St Leonard’s Road Mike Lynott at Bestsellers did some shovelling outside his shop and made a pathway through the ice around the corner into Sea Road.
Mike said: “Problems arise when the snow thaws during the day and then re-freezes overnight, resulting in a slippery sheet of ice.
“If every shop and business in the town cleared a pathway to join their neighbour then the pavements would be safer to walk on.
It’s not a big job and people are so grateful.
“Apart from the safety, it’s hard work walking on snow and ice.”
