PRESSURE is mounting on the council to come clean over the Airbourne charging flop as speculation mounts that the disaster could have left a £300,000 hole in this year's budget.
The full financial breakdown of exactly how much the air show cost to stage and how much revenue was raised through the controversial £5 charge has not yet been unveiled by tourism bosses.
The council's chief executive Martin Ray said this week th
e figures would be revealed as soon as possible.
He added, "Usually it can take some months to get in all the final figures for the event. However, given the public interest my officers are endeavouring to speed up that process and present the report requested by Councillor David Tutt at the earliest opportunity."
The council has been counting the cost after only 48,000 people watched the event from the pay-to-view enclosure and council leader Liberal Democrat David Tutt admitted the decision to charge had been a disaster.
He has ordered a 'top-to-tail inquiry'. His Conservative opponents on the council this week said they would be making sure all the figures will be made available for the public to see exactly what Airbourne has cost.
Conservative councillor Colin Belsey said this week he feared the hit to the budget could be as much as £300,000.
"We, the taxpayers, need to know how every penny was spent and that includes any capital money that was wasted, which could have been spent on other things," said Councillor Belsey, also the cabinet's shadow tourism member.
"I look forward to seeing the accounts. This could cost us as much as £300,000 in total equal to five per cent on the council tax – a nice black hole.
"I said well before the event there should have been far more effort put into keeping it a free air show. I find it astonishing that Cllr Tutt is spending even more taxpayers money on a full inquiry.
"It was his cabinet that made the decision in the first place. 'Falling on one's sword' springs to mind."
Conservative leader David Elkin added, "There were hundreds of thousands of pounds ploughed into this event and we were all being told by the council that all would be fine.
"My group set the alarm bells ringing when £192,000 was put into the general budget as income/profit from Airbourne.
"We will keep the pressure on the council to let the ratepayers of our town know exactly what has been spent with nothing being used from other budgets or hidden reserves.
"As I said last week someone's head should roll for this. It is total incompetence."
Eastbourne MP Nigel Waterson, who called the whole idea of charging "barmy", has also joined in the row and backed Councillor Elkin in his call for someone to resign for what he called the "lack of professionalism surrounding the issue of charging".
He added, "Taxpayers will either have a large bill to pick up or services and workforce will be axed to cover the costs. I am very worried about the long term damage it will do to our lovely town and the tourist economy and even fear that this could be the end of what has been Eastbourne's greatest summer attraction. I sincerely hope not."
