ANOTHER fire has ripped through a disused former pub near Hailsham.
The Golden Martlet, in Station Road, Hellingly, burst into flames in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The blaze took hold of the ground and first floors around 12.45am and it took four fire crews nearly three hours to put it out.

Firefighters from Eastbourne, Hailsham, Herstmonceux and Heathfield attended the scene and stayed until 8.35am to ensure the building was secured.

The cause of the blaze was yesterday being investigated by police.

It is the third time the pub has been hit by fire. The first blaze, in the summer of 2001, gutted the main part of the pub and most of the central roof was lost. The pub has not been in business since.

The disused pub was then targeted by arsonists in February this year.

It took 30 firefighters nearly four hours to contain and put out this second blaze, which police later confirmed was being treated as arson.
