OLIVER Mackie from St Thomas a Becket Junior School and Abigail Freeborn from St John's Meads CE School were the first ever winners of the LTA Eastbourne Primary Schools Individual Championships.
The event, sponsored by Eastbourne Community Tennis, was held recently at the council courts in Hampden Park by Francis Mackie, the LTA community coach for Eastbourne, and involved 24 children from local primary schools.

Francis said, "The idea behind the event is to encourage a return to competitive tennis within the state schools.

"While the more participation based inter-schools competitions must be continued and developed we must not forget that competition is good and that many children enjoy it and need it to spur them on to greater achievements.

"The format of the tournament was simple. The children, playing as individuals not teams, played a series of matches with games becoming harder as they won and a little easier if they lost. The standard of play was very good with some particularly able younger children."
