Kevin Marfleet's driving was described by a witness as 'the worst they had ever seen' when they spotted him on the A27 near Dittons roundabout on April 29.
The 57-year-old had stopped nearby following a collision and was found to be intoxicated wh
en police arrived.
A reading showed he had 142mcg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mcg.
He pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol at Eastbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
The court heard how he had already received a 16-month ban at another court for a similar offence committed after the April incident.
Peter Long, defending, said, "It's fair to say he has an alcohol problem that has been exacerbated over the last two to three years.
"He was working with the Diocese of Chichester as a handyman. It became quite onerous and stressful and as a result he turned to drink.
"This brought him into conflict with his employment and the latter offence is where he turned up at work and had an argument with his employers.
"He had a drink and went back to the office, he didn't have any funds and foolishly drove back.
"He has taken steps to look into his alcohol problem.
"He is a religious man, he has found faith and has looked on this experience as being a timely reminder of what can happen."
Magistrates disqualified Marfleet, of North Ham Road, Littlehampton, for a total of three years and fined him £100.
He must also pay a £15 victim surcharge and court costs of £60.
If he completes a drink drivers' rehabilitation course within a set period his ban will be reduced by nine months.
