A NEW storage depot will be built on land off the A22 despite fears over road safety.
The 220-square metre building at Rosebank Farm was given the go-ahead by Wealden councillors at a meeting on Thursday (August 14).

Part of the plans involve improving the existing access on to the A22 but Polegate councillors Terry Wright and Roy
Martin both expressed their concerns about lorries coming on and off the 'dangerous' main road.

Cllr Wright urged Wealden's planning committee to veto the plans.
He said, "Where Rosebank is is a dangerous exit on to the A22 with all that fast-moving traffic.

"I wouldn't want to be driving a car or a lorry out of there — it's dangerous.

"When I went down there, it took me more than 40 seconds to get out of the access road just to make sure I wasn't causing an obstruction or being a danger to other drivers."

Cllr Wright added its close proximity to houses meant traffic serving the depot could 'disturb local residents'.

Cllr Martin, district councillor for Polegate North, demanded his fellow councillors reject the scheme.

He said, "It's dangerous to get on that road from the A22 and it's dangerous to get off it."

But with no objections from the county council's highways department, Wealden's planning committee said it had no reason to refuse the plan and councillors voted to back the scheme.
