A TARGET to halve the number of MRSA cases at the DGH hospital trust has been missed.
East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust was among the tw- thirds of hospital trusts in England which missed the goverment-set goal to halve MRSA cases in four years, although reported cases of MRSA did drop from 60 in 2003-04 to 53 in 2007-08.

It was also one of 14 per cent of trusts whose rate of MRSA cases per 1,000 bed days rose from 1.69 to 1.70. The national average MRSA rate was 1.16.

Seaford and Polegate MP Norman Baker said, "While it is welcome that our local hospitals have achieved improvements in tackling infection rates over the last few years it is disappointing that they have failed to meet the target to halve the number of MRSA cases.

"People go into hospital to get well, not to pick up other diseases."
