A new year and a new name for one of Hastings' most-loved nights out, Comedic institution Laugh It Up has morphed into Stand Up Hastings.
Why? Who knows. A change is as good as a rest I suppose. What IS known though is that the monthly laughathon which was started by St Leonards funnyman Steve Furst, his then other half Wendy Wason and current custodian Gillian Cowell continue deliveri
ng the laughs.
And since its conception, the night has boasted some big name visitors, like Jim Jeffries who headlined a sell-out show just last month. To start the new year, and the new name, with a bang on Tuesday, January 26 at Venuu, Stand Up Hastings has booked a trio of talented titterlators.
Gareth Richards is the head honcho and has been rapidly gaining a solid reputation since hitting the scene in 2007 – a year in which he won a new acts night at the Comedy Cafe and came runner up at both the Amused Moose Laugh Off and You Must be Joking contest.
His first show was something of a baptism of fire – showcasing his talents aboard The Wibbly-Wobbly Boat – a notoriously rowdy venue in South London. Since then he has performed all over the country pedaling his own unique brand of edgily surreal jokes and one-liners, and stories based on true events.
A sharp writer and rock solid performer, his outsider viewpoint and appealing persona are already making him a favourite with audiences all over the UK.
Support comes from Luke Benson, returning to 1066 Country after a previously impressive visit. Boasting a quirky observational set, he looks the part, he's got the talent, and it's easy to imagine him on the telly. A likeable Geordie with funny jokes. And yes, that may be the weakest summing up of a comedian for yonks. Tough.
Last and possibly least (I wouldn't know – I have not seen any of these three before) is Martin Hill. Other papers have praised his charismatic style and wonderful grasp of language. I am happy to go with them on this one. Tickets as ever are £7 and £5 for concessions and doors open at 7.30pm for an 8.30pm start.
