Cathy Bargh has been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Senior Badminton Championships 2008.
The Sedlescombe-based player will contest the over-45s women's singles and doubles in Punta Umbria, Spain, from September 29-October 4.

She enthused: "There will be players from all over the world - it's not just restricted to the European players - but we're going for the gongs."

Although currently in the close season, Bargh has proven her undoubted dedication to the sport by "running a bit more and pushing a few more weights".

She plans to step up her running, gym work and swimming over the coming weeks, as well as indulging in a spot of kickboxing in a bid to stay light on her toes.

As far as badminton is concerned, Bargh will get some practice in with locally-based county players Sheldon Chambers, Danny Kemp, Gary Pearson and Chris Spice.

She will also travel to Badminton England in Milton Keynes where she will meet up with doubles partner Debbie Rigby (Lancashire) and contest the Kent Veterans' Championships in September.

The call-up caps a wonderful few months for Bargh which began with her winning the over-45s women's singles at the 13th English National Veterans' Championships towards the end of 2007.

She then won her singles match as England beat Scotland in January's McCoig Trophy and clinched the women's over-45s singles at the Scotland International Veterans' Championships.

And in March, Bargh, who has represented Sussex more than 100 times, was runner-up in the over-45s women's singles at the Yonex 92nd All-England Senior Championships.

"I'm over the moon, it's the pinnacle of my career. It just proves if you keep training and training, there's a golden egg at the end of it," she added.

Bargh, a coach at Summerfields Leisure Centre, has a contract with Yonex, the world's largest racket and clothing badminton specialists, in conjunction with Wisdens of Hastings.
