Overseas domination of Rye tennis

For the third year running, the Rye Open Tennis Tournament was dominated by players from overseas who appeared in the finals of four of the five events.
In the men's singles, 18-year-old Michael Thompson (South Africa) beat two-time champion Mark Hadley (New Zealand) in the final 6-4, 6-3.
Thompson, who played at Junior Wimbledon last month, was making his first appearance at the Rye tournament and it may be his last if he goes ahead as planned and joins the world professional tennis circuit later this year.
There was a local winner in the ladies' singles, as Arabella Martin (previous Rye Ladies Singles Champion in 2002 and 2004) regained her title following her return from two years at the University of Pennsylvania (USA).
In the final, she rolled to an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Zoe Taylor (daughter of former British No 1 and Davis Cup captain Roger Taylor).
In the semi-finals, both girls had overcome opposition from the USA in the form of Leticia Alcala (Los Angeles) and Shan Fitzgerald (Chicago).
In the men's doubles, Thompson and Simon Baker (England) took the title by beating Mark Hadley (New Zealand) and Andrew Bretherton (Queens Club) 6-3, 6-4.
Both Thompson and Baker are part of the LTA's development squad now in training at Bisham Abbey and their previous appearance before the Rye Tournament was at Junior Wimbledon. Although born and raised in South Africa, Thompson's parents are British so he will be eligible to play for the UK.
The ladies' doubles was won by the all-American pairing of Leticia Alcala (Los Angeles) and Shan Fitzgerald (Chicago), who had earlier reached the semi-finals of the ladies' singles. The gals from the USA beat Arabella Martin and Roxy Voorspuy (both UK) 6-3, 6-2.
The closest match of the finals came in the last event, when the two losing finalists in the men's and ladies' singles (Hadley and Taylor) won the mixed doubles title. They beat the all-South African pairing of Michael Thompson and Daphne Seigal 7-5, 7-6.
The tournament was interrupted by two or three hours of rain on Sunday but play was extended by starting early the following day and the final match ended at 7pm on Monday evening.
The action continues with the three-day junior tournament until Friday, the closed tournament on Saturday and the mixed doubles tournament on Sunday.
