Motorists in Sussex have shelled out around £3 million in speed camera fines in the last year.

According to statistics released this week, 73,000 speeding vehicles were snapped by fixed cameras, and 50,000 speed camera fines were issued last year in East and West Sussex and Brighton.

Emma Rogers from the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership said that the running costs of speed cameras was around £2.7 million, so little profit is being made.

Any profit that is made goes to the government, which it uses to pay grants to local government.

She said: "It's quite good news.

"Despite the fact that the number of cameras foes up year-on-year, the number of people paying the fines has levelled out, or dropped. So fewer people have been fined, and fewer people have been speeding.

"All the publicity is working.

"What we really want to see is zero people caught on our cameras, but in the meantime we're pleased with this figure."
