The branch raised the cash using a scheme that encourages customers to recycle plastic shopping bags, cutting waste as well being kind to the environment.

The cheque was handed over to head teacher Richard White to go towards converting the old school pavilion into a comfortable and spacious parents' room.

Sainsbury's duty manager Kevin Davis said: "We play an important role in this community and want to do all that we can to be part of it.
"Helping local children to grow and achieve their full potential is a terrific investment for their future."

The donation was made as part of Sainsbury's Community Grants scheme, funded entirely from the profits on sales of Bags for Life. The bags cost 10p and are replaced free of charge when they eventually wear out.
They are then recycled with all the other plastic waste at the store. By purchasing a Bag For Life, customers are contributing to local community projects while helping the environment.

Kevin Davies said: "Sainsbury's is building on its existing support of recycling and community projects by linking our Bags for Life and the funding of local projects. When we heard about the need for funding to help St Peter and St Paul school's new parents room we were happy to put their names forward to request for Community Grant fund."

A cheque for £500 was given to St Peter and St Paul C.E primary school by staff from Sainsbury's. The store also handed over 50 pairs of bright red Sports Relief socks to be handed out to pupils.
