The Smudger's Legacy half marathon team have raised £15,000 so far in memory of popular local footballer Steve "Smudger" Smith who died in a motorbike accident last year.
The money will be going to the Kent Air Ambulance, the McCartney Cancer Unit, and Steve's young family.
The team were delighted to scoop several awards at the Hastings Half Marathon Prize Giving evening on Friday.
They included the Dyer shield for the individual team which raised the most money - and which meant another £500 for the fund; the Bill Bailey Charity Award for being the first team home; Hollington United who were running for Smudger's Legacy won the first non-athletic sports team; and finally Rachael Grass was first in the 15 to 16-year-old category of the mini run, as well as part of the winning Helenswood school team.
"We are delighted with the money raised and prizes won," said Dave Grass, who organised the fundraising with Steve's brother, Darren Smith.
"We want to thank everyone for their efforts - the runners, fundraisers, and the supporters on the route."
A Smudger's Legacy presentation night is being held next Saturday, May 10, at St Helen's Sports and Social Club from 7.30pm for everyone involved.
Plans are already being made to organise another team to enter next year's half marathon and anyone interested should contact Dave on 07790910002 or Darren on 07834893281.
