A knockout donation for local boxing club

Representatives from Bexhill Lions Club visited Bexhill Amateur Boxing Club to hand over a cheque for £200 and learn more about the local club.

Bexhill Lions Club President June Hough and Chairman of the Youth committee, Paul Fleming, joined Bexhill Amateur Boxing Club (BABC) on one of their training nights,

The Lions were given a tour of the centre, which is based at Bexhill Squash Club, De La Warr Parade, and watched a video of one of BABC’s promising new talent, Bexhill High student Nakabul Khan, 13, winning his first competition.

Young members of the club then gave an energetic live sparing display in the ring.

The Lions entered the ring and, not out for the count, presented a cheque for £200 to BABC. President June said: “We are delighted to support the Club and I am impressed with the enthusiasm of members, particularly the younger ones.”

Accepting the donation, BABC Coach Tone Godwin thanked the Lions for their generous support and said, as safety was a key element in the Club the cash would be put to good use. “The money will enable us to purchase much needed safety matting that can be used during training.”

Last year the club was forced to move from its home at Pebsham Community Centre after a dispute with management. Following a temporary move to Egerton Park, BABC subsequently moved to the squash club and now boast around 40 members.

Mr Godwin added: “Boxing is a great sport that teaches discipline, confidence and respect for others.”

BABC runs sessions for male and females aged 8 years and over, supervised by Amateur Boxing Association qualified coaches and new members are welcome. For further details on how to join call 07840 914432 or e-mail bexhill.boxing.club@outlook.com
