All hail the Kings of Sussex Jazz
Preview: Sussex Jazz Kings, Azur, tomorrow (Friday), 8pm.
The Sussex Jazz Kings are the featured band at tonight's 1066 Jazz Club showcase.
Formed by Dave Stradwick, after his series of defections from Papa Joes All Stars, Vintage Jazz and Gambit Jazzmen, his primary aim was to enjoy a more relaxed life in Sussex, and to ease back from such a previously hectic schedule. The best laid plans of mice and men and all that.
Originally Dave borrowed musicians from a pool, subject to availability, but to nobody's surprise the band took off immediately to become one of the most popular 'traddie' bands on the club scene, and so a more regular line up was required.
After one or two twiddly bits this was achieved by selecting a group of musicians with that rare talent of transmitting their enjoyment in playing to the audience.
And jazz fans across the region are grateful Dave's intended "good life" has been put on hold for the time being.
The full line up is as follows: Dave Stradwick, trumpet; Bernard Stutt, clarinet; Len Baldwin, trombone. Phil Durrell, banjo; Pete Clancy, bass; and John Hall, drums.
Entry on the door is 6 for members and 8 for guests.
