The Battle of Hastings features on a new 50p coin this year.

The coin commemorates the 950th anniversary of the historic battle in 1066.

Images representing Shakespeare plays and Beatrix Potter tales are also among those featuring on coins in 2016 released by the Royal Mint.

The coins are designed to give a snapshot of Britain over the past 1,000 years.

Another 50p coin, as well as the one commemorating the Battle of Hastings, marks 150 years since author Beatrix Potter’s birth.

Kevin Boorman, marketing and major projects manager for Hastings Borough Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Battle of Hastings features on a special commemorative 50p coin, as announced today (January 1) by the Royal Mint.

“Our then council leader, the late Jeremy Birch, wrote to the Royal Mint two years ago asking for consideration to be given to producing a Battle of Hastings coin in 2016 to mark the 950th anniversary of arguably the most important battle in English history, and which has just this week been recognised by English Heritage as the most significant anniversary in 2016, and we were delighted when they agreed to do so.

“Having 50p coins circulating effectively in perpetuity will be a constant reminder of the event, and a great advert for Hastings and 1066 Country. It shows just how significant 2016 will be for us.

“Special ‘brilliant uncirculated’ copies of the coin in a souvenir pack can be bought from our Tourist Information Centre in Breeds Place, for £10.”
