Be on the lookout for cable theft say police

Sussex police are asking residents to help them crack down on cable theft in the area.

A police spokesman said people should be aware that it could be their telephone line being targeted, adding: “Criminals often target underground BT cables works, accessed from manhole covers. A common technique is to access manholes and cut cables at points 100m apart. They attach the cabling to a transit van or 4x4 truck and drag the cabling out from the ground, often behind a hedge row out of sight. It is not uncommon for criminal teams do this in residential and urban streets.

“Works undertaken for BT may be by a different company but they all work to a professional standard with hazard signage and barriers around access points. If this is not the case, then call us on 101.”
