On 10th October 2015, Bexhill Chess Club played Hastings & St Leonard’s Chess Club in the latest biannual match for the Challenge Trophy. It was a 50-game, 20-minute-per-side Rapidplay contest between two teams of ten players each. Bexhill went into the lead from the first round and stayed ahead throughout. The top five boards, with four juniors, won their section convincingly, by 16½-8½, but the lower section had a harder fight, emerging victorious by a single point, 13-12. This means that, since the Challenge Trophy was inaugurated, Bexhill have won it four times out of six, this latest victory reversing two previous successive defeats.
The Finn family juniors were again the backbone of the team and won 14 points from a possible 18 between them. The individual performances of the Bexhill players were as follows: Jonathan Finn 4/5, Thomas Finn 3½/5, Daniel Finn 3½/5, Batuhan Kaya, 1½/5, Roy Webb 4/5, John Kimber, 3/5, Mel Stockdale 2/5, Alfred Mikurenda 3/5, Elizabeth Finn 2/3, David Slidel 2/5 and Mercy Nieva 1/2.
Congratulations must go to the veteran Hastings & St Leonards player, Con Power, the former organiser of the Hastings International Chess Congress, who has remained unbeaten for two matchers, scoring overall a most impressive 9/10, with eight wins and two draws.
