On our latest outing, 57 Members enjoyed a comfortable coach ride to Windsor, passing through Runnymede just days after the Queen had attended the Magna Carta celebrations.

On arrival at Windsor we drove down to the Thames and boarded a river boat waiting to take us up stream to Maidenhead. We had the boat to ourselves, and spent a relaxing time watching the swans, ducks and other wild fowl swimming alongside. A continuous commentary pointed out many things of interest, the new Eton boating shed, how the locks were maintained and managed, and as the banks became more populated, we gazed in awe at the riverside mansions and their manicured gardens.

At Maidenhead our coach was waiting and we set off to our final destination in nearby Taplow – Cliveden House – the Manor once rocked by the Profumo scandal, and now a prestigious hotel maintained by the National Trust. The gardens were immaculate, and a short tour of part of the house, included the French dining room and the main hall, both of which remain just as they were in the sixties – would that the walls could speak!! Another wonderful day out for our Society – organised as ever by Stuart Wood.

Our next outing is on 4th. July, to the beautiful Whydown Manor Garden in Bexhill.

There are places available, at only £8.00 per person, to include either coffee and cake in the morning or a cream tea in the afternoon.

For full information please contact Stuart Wood on 01424 222969.

All profits will be given to ‘In the Wings’ A young group of singers who will be serenading you during the day.

It has been an exciting few weeks at the club, but finally this week, after a sensational AGM with a record sixty seven members in attendance, we have a new executive committee.
