Bexhill in Bloom celebrated its 25th anniversary this year and marked the occasion with a barbecue last Sunday at the Ingram’s allotments in Crowhurst Road, at the back of the New Inn, Sidley;

With burgers, chicken, steaks and salad followed by strawberries and cream, the event was enjoyed by a large crowd who gathered on a lovely sunny day.

Sandy Melvin, chair of Bexhill in Bloom, said a few words welcoming everyone to the event and thanking them for coming.

The allotments are run by Bexhill Neighbourhood Gardeners, which was also celebrating its 10 year anniversary.

John Willis, who has run the allotments, said: “We are delighted that so many people attended.”

He went on to explain that the allotments are set up for the community to go along and help with planting, etc, then share in the produce when it is harvested.

“We are always looking for more volunteers to help with the work,” he added.

“We meet every Saturday morning from 10.00am to noon, so just turn up.”

John also offers training to Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) standards.

Bexhill in Bloom Awards are on Friday, September 23 at The Caring Community from 5pm with light refreshments and from 6pm.

Bexhill MP Huw Merriman will be in attendance.

Last year, Bexhill came up smelling of roses as it scooped a hat-trick of accolades at the South and South East In Bloom Awards.

South and South East in Bloom judges visited Bexhill earlier this year and the 2016 award winners will be announced on September 14.
