Bexhill Lions Club have come to the aid of local voluntary home visiting service Homecall by providing them with funds to purchase a much needed new computer.
The Lions donated £500 which will pay for a new lap-top.
Homecall, a local voluntary home visiting service for blind and partially sighted people in Bexhill and surrounding areas, recently asked Bexhill Lions for help.
It was founded in 1985 to recruit, train and support volunteer visitors for a home visiting scheme. With the challenges of running a modern day charity in terms of volunteer coordination, administration, compliance and finance, their old computer was not up to the job.
The Club recognised the need and Lion Ken Rushbrooke approached the Lions’ national spectacles collection and recycling centre in Chichester.
Here, donated spectacles are sorted in preparation for onward transmission to Medico France in Le Havre, which has the necessary equipment to clean and grade the spectacles ready for use in eye camps in Africa, India and Eastern Europe. UK Lions Clubs provide more than 50% of the spectacles processed by Medico France and last year over 300,000 pairs of spectacles were dispatched.
The project also raises financial support for eye related projects by recycling scrap metal from spectacles that are broken or unsuitable for recycling. It was from this fund that a grant was made to Homecall.
Nick Porter, Chair of the Community Service Committee said that the Bexhill Lions Club was delighted to offer its support and presented Homecall with the cheque.
Scheme Manager Leah Norman said “On behalf of Homecall I would like to say thank you to the Lions for their generous grant of £500 for a new Laptop for the Scheme Manager.
“The laptop will make such a difference with the daily running of the charity and the up to date technology will ensure tasks are carried out with greater efficiency”
Unwanted spectacles can be dropped off at Spectacle Hut, Green and Elliot, Old Town Surgery, Cooden Surgery and Barry Edwards Little Common.
