24/7 alcohol sale at supermarket?
A SUPERMARKET is applying for a 24-hour licence to sell alcohol.
So far there have been no objections to Asda's application for an extended licence, meaning the application may be granted by Eastbourne Borough Council without a committee meeting.
Residents and business owners close to the store in Pevensey Bay Road are entitled to object, as are police or fire services on the grounds of prevention of crime and disorder, public nuisance, public safety or the protection of children from harm.
Asda is asking for permission to sell alcohol 24 hours a day seven days a week, although it will be bound by trading laws which only permit alcohol to be sold between 10am and 11pm on a Sunday.
At the moment, it can only sell alcohol over 24 hours on a maximum of 15 occasions a year, after a licence application to do so in August 2005.
The store opens 24 hours from Monday at 7.30am to Saturday at 10pm.
Objections to the application must be made by Friday, November 28, on 415367, at www.eastbourne.gov.uk, or by writing to Licensing team, Eastbourne Borough Council, 1 Grove Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex, BN21 4TW.
