70th anniversary for WRVS

A tea party was held in honour of the Women's Royal Voluntary Service on Saturday afternoon.

The event was organised by Harriet Chapman and took place in her home in Gunters Lane.

Harriet has been an WRVS member for 23 years and was asked to host the tea party to mark the organisation's 70th anniversary.

Other members who attended were Juliet Duffy, Kaye Deck, Joan Muncey, and Betty Martin, but also attending were members of the local branch of League Of Friends.

Juliet commented: "I cam down here 25 years ago, and I had been here for about six months when Adeline Prideaux who was running the WRVS called to say - you have been here for six months and you are doing nothing...I suggest you come and join us."

Like the other ladies present she was involved in the Meals On Wheels Service but WRVS work also included helping with hospital work.

Harriet said: "I think it is important to keep going - I think they do a lot of good work. If it wasn't for volunteers I think what a crisis a lot of organisations would be in."
