A bag of nails? That’s pure gold for Barby

SHEER hard graft, backed by cash donations and gifts in kind, means a local animal sanctuary is on course to get a new pen and shelter within months.

In her latest progress report on developments at her eponymous sanctuary in Freezeland Lane, Sidley, Barby Keel has again declared herself “overwhelmed” by people’s generosity.

Barely weeks ago she issued a reluctant plea for help after it was clear an enclosure and outbuildings at the entrance to the sanctuary were on the point of collapse.

Estimates suggested that around £14,000 would be needed to replace the facility, used to house some of the hundreds of animals in care, and Barby admitted: “I was at my wit’s end as to how we might raise such a big sum.”

But after the Observer featured news of the crisis, cash began rolling in from donors anxious to help.

A much-relieved Barby said: “Thankfully, money is still coming in and we’re just about on course to meet our target.

“But best of all has been the readiness of people to help reduce costs by giving of their own time and effort to clear and prepare the site ready for construction to begin.

“That, plus donations of bags of nails and packets of screws from people visiting our charity shop in St Leonards Road, Bexhill, and huge support from builders’ merchants Stamco, have made a real difference.

“I’ve said it before but I want to say it again - thank you to everyone who has rallied round to help. I’m deeply grateful.”
