A huge success for Warhol expo

AROUND 110,00 visitors have now seen Warhol Is Here at the De La Warr Pavilion.

The exhibition, which opened at the end of September, has been an “incredible” success, according to curator David Rhodes and raised more than £13,000 just in donations.

The free exhibition will close next month on February 26, with a celebratory Random Friday which will also mark the 25th anniversary of Warhol’s death, on February 24.

It is intended this will be a student event with their work inspired by Warhol and Sussex Coast College and Brighton University have been invited to take part.

David had not expected such a strong response to Warhol Is Here.

He said: “In this difficult economic time for everyone, the exhibition has been very successful in many ways.

“In terms of our future exhibitions it has shown us what we can achieve and has increased our ambition.

“It is such an important and valuable exhibition and we have proved that we are able to put on a show at this level.

“We have got some very exciting and ambitious plans for the future and we are broadening our programme to include quite surprising objects from different museum and gallery collections, different kinds of exhibitions, not seen at the DLWP before. This is what we are working on right now.”

As part of the Warhol season, David has led many tours around the galleries.

He said: “One of the most rewarding things for me is to share my love and enthusiasm for modern art and it has been great to have that kind of close relationship with the people of Bexhill, who have been incredibly responsive to the Warhol show.

“That feeling for people that what we do here is accessible and they are included is something I have really experienced with this exhibition. It is because he is a great artist but also because he has that level of fame and status.”

The next show at the DLWP will be an entirely different prospect when the galleries are opened up for Welsh artist Cerith Wyn Evans - with windows revealed instead of walls.

David said: “It will be a very sparse and minimal, beautiful but challenging exhibition. And kind of a statement about our confidence for the future, which is very important.”

Warhol Is Here closes on February 26 and the final free public tour is on 2pm that day - booking is required.
