Action group starts up to oppose development
OPPONENTS of the proposed 275-home Barnhorn Green development in Little Common have formed an action group.
They will meet at Little Common Community Centre next Saturday (February 11) from 10.30am to 12 midday, and again on Saturday February 25 at the same times.
SayNo2BarnhornGreen aims to stop the development of 275 houses, industrial units, and retirement complex planned by the Marchfield Group which announced its plans with an exhibition at St Mark’s church hall.
Concerned individuals have already flagged up the issue of current congestion around the Little Common roundabout and the impact of extra traffic on the village.
One of the action group is nearby resident Anne Capon who was shocked when she read about the proposals in the Observer.
She said: “Like so many others, I was devastated and annoyed to learn of plans to build on this beautiful greenfield site.
“Additionally, the A259 Barnhorn Road is already an extremely busy road no matter what time of day.
“It becomes a ‘nightmare’ at peak times, or whenever there are road works, accidents or other incidents which block the road or slow the traffic.
“The proposal to install traffic lights near the bends at Greyhorses would probably not only infuriate the residents, but also the thousands of people who need to travel this route on a daily basis.
“The area they wish to develop is a green field site which, according to the Rother Council website - as I understand it - is currently outside the development boundary.
“During one of my visits to the exhibition, held by the Marchfield Group, I did ask whether it would make any difference to their planning application if they received an overwhelming number of feedback forms showing opposition to the proposal. I was told it wouldn’t make any difference and that the application would go ahead.”
The SayNo2BarnhornGreen action group is, she said, “very much in its infancy” and the purpose of holding the two meetings is to find out what the community thinks, and who wants to get involved.
A number of leaflets, prepared by the action group, are being delivered to residents, and a website is also imminent.
