ANNOUNCEMENT: Eastbourne Herald and Gazette team have moved to new offices
THE EDITORIAL department of the Eastbourne Gazette and Herald series has moved to new premises in the town centre.
Reporters and production staff have made the move from Commercial Road to Berkeley House, in Gildredge Road. The change of surroundings marks the end of more than three decades at the familiar Beckett House building close to Eastbourne railway station.
Herald and Gazette reporters are far from a nomadic bunch and the new premises will be only the third occupied by TR Beckett in more than 130 years. Thomas Beckett established the business at 4 Pevensey Road in 1873, shortly after buying the Gazette. The premises were expanded over the years and remained the company's hub until the late 1970s.
In 1968 Becketts acquired a well-established print company called Strange the Printers, who occupied 1 Commercial Road. The print firm was later sold on, and the decision was made to move the newspaper business to the site - together with a new Goss web offset press. This replaced the letterpress which had been installed at Pevensey Road in 1909 and which had printed the town's newspapers for nearly 70 years.
The new premises will be the permanent base for our reporters, design and production staff, while advertising, public notices and announcements will continue to be administered from our existing office in Lismore Road.
