Ardingly tattoo a huge success
THE first military tattoo to be held in Mid Sussex has been ruled a success by the organisers.
David Arnold, producer of the Royal British Legion Tunes of Glory Military Tattoo and Concert, estimated that around 3,000 people had attended the day-long event.
He said: "We had around 3,000 people there which was less than we had hoped for but, nonetheless, is an encouraging start for what we hope will become an annual event.
"Inevitably we had a few teething problems and I would apologise to anyone who was inconvenienced in any way on the day, not least because the event finished much later than advertised.
"Nevertheless, the feedback from the audience has been very positive about the contents of the afternoon and evening and especially the Tattoo itself, the concert that followed and the spectacular fireworks finale.
"We also had the bonus of a magnificent flypast by a Spitfire and Hurricane of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight."
At the event David, from Lewes, launched his third book of wartime stories and memories entitled Seventy Years On.
Among others it features the story of the chance meeting of Ditchling-based Dame Vera Lynn's daughter, Virginia, and Squadron Leader Tom Jones and their subsequent marriage.
Sq Ld Jones, who flew a Chinnock helicopter in the Falkland Islands, Iraq and Afganistan, is a co-organiser of Tunes of Glory.
