BALI promises to keep its eye on waste and landfill issues

BEXHILL Against Landfill and Incineration (BALI) pledged to keep its eye on the ball at its recent annual general meeting.

The threat to create a landfill facility at Ashdown Brickworks has receded with the publication of East Sussex County Council’s Draft Waste and Minerals Plan, which does not retain the site.

However members heard there are still some obstacles to negotiate.

The plan is still in draft stage and could be changed before adoption. There could also be objections from other organisations over provision of waste facilities in the county.

Several phases still need to be gone through, including representation for comments from February 24 to April 10, submission of the plan to the government, and a public inquiry, which is expected to take place in the autumn.

Colin Bennett, acting chairman of BALI, said: “We also must not forget that there are no specific barriers that prevent any application, under the present planning system, to prevent companies from applying for planning permission to develop any part of the Ashdown site for the purpose of landfill, incineration, or any other form of development. The necessity for BALI to continue to campaign will need to remain the highest priority.

“We advise all Bexhill residents to be vigilant and remind them that the threat to Ashdown Brickworks is going to remain with us for the foreseeable future. Then, and only then, can BALI and Bexhill honestly say that this current threat to turn Ashdown Brickworks into the major South East dumping ground is finally removed from our town.”
