Battle MP praises flood response team

Battle MP Greg Barker praised the Rother flood response team and the Robertsbridge flood defences on Saturday (Feb 28) when he inspected the flood defences after the area was put on a heightened state of alert, following heavy rain on already sodden ground.

Team leader Russell Long briefed the MP on the flood situation in Robertsbridge and across the area, including Etchingham and Bodiam.

He showed Mr Barker the pumps and flood gate system which protects the Robertsbridge area and explained the preparation process and constant monitoring the team goes through to be ready to tackle these high water emergencies.

The pumps were in constant use over the weekend, overseen by the field team who were on site day and night.

Despite extremely high waters, the use of the pumps meant the flood gates were not needed and the river kept to its banks.

The team were able to stand down on Monday morning but will continue to monitor the site regularly.

Mr Barker said: "The flood defences have yet to be tested with an event comparable to the terrible floods of 2000, but I was very impressed with the way in which the team from the Environment Agency swung into action ahead of the weekend and kept me fully briefed on the situation.

"The sight of staff on location in the village around the clock over the weekend was extremely reassuring and I am sure was greatly appreciated by local residents."
