Bexhill High help for Haiti

BEXHILL High School is launching a £30,000 campaign to build a new school in earthquake-hit Haiti.

Staff and pupils will hold a series of events to help the stricken country and are urging the Bexhill community to support the fundraising.

Executive Principal Mike Conn said: "We, as a school, want to do our bit for the people of Haiti. The focus is on survival at present but we, as recipients of Building Schools for the Future money, want to help them in building their futures.

"A school will be very much needed so we want to do this and recognise the value of education in the recovery process."

Bexhill High will be asking each member of its community - pupils, staff, governors and friends - to raise 20.

Milestone certificates will be presented for raising 10 (bronze), 15 (silver) and 20 (gold).

A platinum certificate will be awarded for 30 and a diamond certificate for 50.

Mike Conn said: "There will be a series of events for fundraising from whole school to form-based activities as well as individual ideas.

"But this isn't just about Bexhill High School - this is a great opportunity for the community of Bexhill to become involved.

"We would like to see this as a project which everyone in Bexhill and the surrounding area can play their part.

"We do have experience of building a school abroad in a needy area - we did this in Uganda a few years ago, so we are happy to take the lead on this.

"However, our message to Bexhill is very clear - come and join us to help make a difference to the people of Haiti."

The school will announce details of fundraising events in the coming weeks.

If you would like to help, please contact the school on 730722.
